Roger Lienhard is Founder and Chairman of Blue Horizon. Roger’s journey to investing in sustainable social entrepreneurship and development projects related to plant-/cell-based food and related topics around the globe started after a successful career building and selling several advertising, media and online marketing companies. He is a vegan pioneer in the financial community and has a deeply rooted mission to taking the animals out of the food chain and support companies for creating a brighter, more sustainable future. To accelerate his mission, he founded the Blue Horizon International Foundation.
Björn Witte is the Managing Partner of Blue Horizon. Björn is assessing opportunities and developing the pure-play impact investment strategy of Blue Horizon Group. He is Blue Horizons strategic thinker and deal maker with a strong background of transforming the food industries as an entrepreneur in international markets. Björn has a track record in building and developing companies, from analyzing and spotting opportunities to setting priorities and getting things done.
Anela will be joining Blue Horizon in September and will be responsible for managing the legal and compliance functions. Anela has over 15 years of private markets investment experience, working with some of the world's largest sponsors such as CVC, Cinven and Advent. Prior to joining Blue Horizon, she was the Global Head of Legal at Partners Group, a leading asset manager with over USD 100 billion in assets under management. Anela started her career with Linklaters before joining international law firm CMS where she became a partner in 2015.
Michel Hirschi is responsible for managing the financial and governance functions of Blue Horizon and supporting the company’s growth strategy in the food 4.0 industry. Michel has over 20 years of broad international finance expertise in the technology and industrial markets including strategic transformations through the economic cycles. Before joining Blue Horizon, Michel Hirschi held several CFO and executive positions in the Swiss IT and industry sector. He also was a non-executive board member and advisor in various private equity funds and their portfolio companies.
Przemek Obloj is responsible for Blue Horizon’s investment activities. He brings more than 15 years of investing experience from leading global organisations including CVC Capital Partners and EQT Partners. Prior to joining Blue Horizon, Przemek was the Managing Director and Head of European Private Equity at PSP Investments, a C$200 billion Canadian pension investment manager. He started his career at McKinsey & Company and holds a MSc in Finance from Warsaw School of Economics and an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau and Singapore.
Sedef Köktentürk is a Managing Partner and the Chief Operating Officer of Blue Horizon and leads on firmwide impact management, client operations and technology. She is the Impact Partner on the Blue Horizon Growth team, and focuses on ESG integration. Sedef has 20 years of capital markets experience from leading global investment firms including Generation Investment Management and Goldman Sachs. She started her career at PricewaterhouseCoopers in financial advisory and holds an MBA from the Columbia Business School in New York. Sedef is also an Olympian; she represented Turkey in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in windsurfing.
Thomas is our start-up and transaction specialist. He has over 15 years of hands-on experience in building agriculture, food processing and other start-up ventures. He holds a PhD in Law from the University of Bern, Switzerland and a Master’s Degree in International Corporate Law from Georgetown University in Washington DC, USA.
Aldo Uva is a Member of the Board at Blue Horizon since 2021. He is currently CEO at CSM Ingredients, a global food ingredients company. Aldo has previously served as COO, Chief R&D Officer and President Americas at the LIVEKINDLY Co. and before that held positions as COO and Chief Open Innovation Officer at Ferrero, President and CEO at Firmenich Flavor Division, as CEO at Natuzzi, as VP and Head of the Global Beverages and Food Services Division at NESTLE; as CEO Coffee and Tea North America and Head of Transformation at Sara Lee Corporation, and as CEO of North and Central America, Mexico and Caribe for Parmalat. Aldo Uva started his career at Indesit Company, where he held several roles, the last being CEO for Russia, Central and Eastern Europe. He graduated in Economy at the University of Bologna and is an Alumni at the Singularity University of Cupertino.
Caroline Clemetson is a Member of the Board at Blue Horizon since 2021. She is a Partner with Schellenberg Wittmer Ltd, one of the leading business law firms with offices in Switzerland and Singapore and a member of the firm's Management Committee. Caroline heads the Investment Management Practice of the firm and focuses on financial regulation, in particular investment management and financial products as well as private equity and capital markets. Prior to joining Schellenberg Wittmer, she was Head of the Investments Products Department at the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA from 2006 until 2014. She holds an LL.M. from the Columbia Law School in New York and is admitted to the bar in Switzerland.
Jeremy Paul Abson will become a Member of the Board of Blue Horizon. He is currently the President and CFO of TBG AG, an investment company located in Zurich, Switzerland, and Independent Director of Churchill Capital II, a special purpose acquisition company, located in New York, USA. Jeremy has more than 20 years’ experience in financial and general management. Prior to joining TGB AG, Jeremy was the Chief Operating Officer of Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd (“UTSB”). The multi-billion investment company which had significant interests in the telecommunications, media, power, energy, marine logistics and real estate sectors. Prior to working at UTSB, Jeremy was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Manchester University, UK, and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School in October 2011.
Jo Van Biesbroeck is a Member of the Board at Blue Horizon since 2021. He has been Chief Strategy Officer and Chief International Business Development of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV until 2015, where he also started his career in 1978. Anheuser-Busch InBev is the world’s leading brewer and is amongst the world’s top five companies operating consumer goods. From 2015 to 2020, he held the CEO position of the leading Belgian soccer team RSC Anderlecht. Jo is President of the Board of Matexi Group and EIT food and an independent Board member of Telenet, Etex, Patrinvest Lux, Puratos, De Nil and Inno.com. He holds a degree in economics from KU Leuven.
Sonja Stirnimann is a Member of the Board of Blue Horizon since 2021. She is the founder and Managing Partner of Structuul Ltd. and has three decades of professional experience in Corporate Governance, Audit and Finance. She is serving several boards of listed and non-listed companies as a member or chair in audit and risk committees with her profound expertise. Prior in her career, she held several management positions in global companies like UBS, EY, Holcim and Deloitte. Sonja holds a global Executive MBA in Financial Services and Insurance from the Universities of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland, HEC Montreal, Canada and Vlerick Ghent, Belgium; is a Swiss Certified Public Accountant, a Licensed Audit Expert and a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) as well as she is certified by the IMD Lausanne, Switzerland.
Walter Huber is a Member of the Board of Blue Horizon since 2021. From 2008 to 2019 he was a member of the General Management of Migros-Genossenschaftsbund-Bund and CEO of M-Industry. M-Industry is a group with worldwide over 30 production facilities in the food and non-food-markets producing for the largest Swiss retailer Migros and numerous leading international retailers. Prior to that, Walter worked at Emmi Group. He was named CEO of the group in 2004 and led the IPO in the same year. He is currently a member of the Board of G.&A. Duttweiler Stiftung (Migros) and Läderach AG, among others. Walter has deep knowledge in scale-up processes from small to large companies. He is experienced in driving innovations and building brands and is active as a start-up investor. Walter's focus lies on sustainability and value orientation as a matter of the heart.
Based in the United States, Allison has joined Blue Horizon as Executive Assistant to Founder/Executive Chairman, Roger Lienhard. She has extensive office and events management experience in the ad tech and finance industries, including MediaMath, Bridgewater, and AQR. After attending Redlands University and the Arts Institutes of America, Allison was assistant to celebrities Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Wilkerson. As a passionate vegan for over a decade, she is thrilled to be working with an organization that is dedicated to creating a more sustainable future.
Armin is responsible for Blue Horizon’s Accounting, Controlling and Risk Management and supports the financial and governance functions. Prior to joining Blue Horizon, he was Senior Audit Manager at Swiss Life and lead Internal Audit mandates in the area of Asset Management. He started his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers and holds a BSc in Finance & Accounting, graduated as Swiss Certified Public Accountant and is a Certified Swiss Fund and Asset Management Officer.
Brendan Brazier is the co-founder of Vega, Pulp Culture, and Fire Road, bestselling author of the Thrive book series, Editor-in-Chief of alive magazine, and an Executive Producer of The Game Changers film. He’s also a former professional Ironman triathlete and a two-time Canadian 50km Ultra Marathon Champion. Brendan is regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities on plant-based performance nutrition, and now invests in and works with socially responsible food & tech companies whose mandate is to fix our food system and reduce the environmental strain of food production.
Bruce is Co-Founder and Executive Director of The Good Food InstituteThe Good Food, a nonprofit organization that promotes innovative alternatives to conventional meat, dairy products, and eggs. Bruce graduated magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, from Georgetown Law and Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College. He also holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics.
Céline is an intern at Blue Horizon in Zurich and works with the analyst team. She holds a
bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from ETH Zurich and aims to pursue her master’s
degree at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics at ETH Zurich. Her
matura thesis on urban farming and how aquaponic rooftop farms could revolutionize local food
supply chains sparked her interest in ecological food production, supply and consumption. Ever
since she is passionate about plant-based nutrition and food tech innovations and deeply
interested in contributing to today’s developments of alternative and sustainable foods that have
an impact on a big scale and will change our world.
Chris is Chief of staff and our digital media & innovation guru. He has decades of expertise in leading digital business projects and teams and a strong background in project management and product/service development. He is well versed in implementing online strategies (e.g. HNI platform for Art Basel), aggregating traffic and motivating as well as inspiring teams to embrace the digital mindset in order to transform products and services into revenue and assets.
Derek has been part of our Venture Capital team in Zurich since 2019, and has over 7 years of experience. Prior to Blue Horizon, he worked with growth, M&A and finance at a Private Equity-backed scale-up. He is enthusiastic about the start-up ecosystem: he co-founded an angel investment group, and advises accelerators. He holds an MBA from INSEAD (Fontainebleau and Singapore) and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from PUC (Rio de Janeiro).
Fabio is responsible for Corporate Development and strategic projects at Blue Horizon and mainly focuses on Legal, Compliance, Corporate Governance and HR topics. He is a Swiss Attorney-at-Law and holds an Executive M.B.L. from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in European and International Business Law. Before joining Blue Horizon, Fabio worked in several renowned law firms in Zurich and Zug and was Head Legal & Compliance and CHRO of MediaMarkt Switzerland.
Based in Zurich, Franziska supports the Client Solutions Team. She graduated in Business Administration (studies in Passau and Hamburg, Germany) with a Major in Marketing. Apart from her extensive experience as Senior Executive Assistant on C-Level in Group and SME structures, she brings with her a wide range of professional experience in different fields such as New Business Development, Sales, Project- and Event-Management. She is passionate for outdoor activities such as hiking & water sports and is very interested in sustainable architecture & interior design, the latter she is studying part-time.
Friederike is the scientific Director on the Blue Horizon Growth team. She brings experience in biotechnology and strategy consulting: Friederike holds a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from the University of Oxford. With that, she joined the Boston Consulting Group, working across biopharma, biotech, energy and private equity for 3.5 years. Friederike maintains a strong network in the scientific community, and is excited about safeguarding humanity’s long term future. To this end, she co-authored work that informed the research agenda of Oxford's Global Priorities Institute, and is an active member of the effective altruism community.
Ilsabe is an intern at Blue Horizon in Zurich working with the Growth, Platform, and Seed teams. She is currently completing her MSc in Food Science at ETH Zurich and University of Copenhagen. Before joining Blue Horizon, she worked at Bühler on the development of processing solutions for plant-based proteins. She also has experience with precision fermentation through laboratory work done for her bachelor’s thesis. Ilsabe is passionate about improving access to sustainable foods globally.
Janna brings over 5 years of experience in Fundraising, Venture Capital, Private Equity and Corporate Finance to her role in Blue Horizon’s Investor Relations Team, after holding positions at EY Transaction Advisory, Lürssen, and most recently Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners. With a long-standing history in animal welfare activism and advocating for plant-based nutrition, Janna joined Blue Horizon to leverage her business skillset and her drive to replace animal-derived products with more sustainable options in global consumer markets. Additional to building a strong network in the global impact investing ecosystem, Janna functions as an advisor to sustainability-driven start-ups, and as a judge at start-up pitch competitions. Janna holds an M.Sc. from HEC Paris, and B.Sc. from European Business School.
Juergen is responsible for Finance, including Risk and Compliance. He spent many years’ structuring and managing alternative investment funds. Over many years he was involved in the international securitisation market and founded his own financing company. As an MBA graduate of ESCP, he experienced a genuinely European curriculum studying in Paris, Oxford and Berlin.
Kieran is a Director in the Blue Horizon Growth team, responsible for sourcing and executing investments for the Blue Horizon Growth Fund. He previously worked in Temasek’s Agribusiness Investment Team in Singapore and at PwC Strategy, starting his career in London before relocating to help build the team in Singapore. Kieran holds a First Class degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and a Masters in International Relations from the University of Oxford.
Lara is an intern at Blue Horizon and works across the Growth and Seed Platforms. She is currently completing her MSc at the University College London in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. She also holds a degree in Biomedical Sciences with first class honors from University of Westminster and has conducted her BSc thesis on the production of novel biodegradable plastic alternatives (i.e. biopolymers) from bacterial fermentation. She has previously worked at the Luxembourg Institute of Health on the valorization of beer brewery residues fortified in bread to develop products that are nutritionally dense. Lara is passionate about scientific solutions which are sustainability-driven and focus on eliminating animals out of the food chain to provide a better future.
Lea brings two decades of investing, founding and operating experience. She has been on both sides of the table, both sides of the pond and has a passion for scaling tech-enabled purpose-driven companies. Her interest in health and sustainability has been a lifelong passion: from becoming a nutritionist, to launching businesses and funds with sustainability and impact angles. Lea’s career began in investment banking and private equity at Morgan Stanley, where she served as Chief of Staff to the President. Lea has been investing and building ever since, including five years with Northzone, one of the leading VC funds. While there, Lea focused on the fintech, mobile and marketplace sectors, and made investments such as iZettle (sold to Paypal for $2.2bn) and Trustpilot (IPO, "TRST"). In San Francisco, Lea served as a founder, angel investor, board member, and advisor. She was the Co-founder, President & COO of Averon, the world's strongest and easiest mobile identity platform and on the founding team of Charge, an electric microbility fueling network. Lea is a founding partner of Ozone X, an investing platform focused on under-represented founders and was until recently a partner at Antler, a global early-stage tech accelerator. She also advises select funds. A Kauffman Fellow, Lea holds a Harvard MBA and an MSc in Business Administration from Stockholm School of Economics and HEC in Paris. She has served on a variety of corporate boards as well as on the Board of SVCA (the Swedish Venture Capital and Private Equity Association). Lea is a mother to a vivacious daughter, former fitness instructor, and a performance hacking hobbyist. She lives by the adage that only “together, we rise.”
Marc is the Head of Communications at Blue Horizon based in Zurich. He brings along 13 years of experience in investment writing, media relations and corporate communications having held positions at various asset managers including UBS, Man Investments and GAM, where he was an Executive Director and Head of Public Relations. Marc holds a bachelor’s degree from Berry College in the U.S., where he also played collegiate tennis, and a master’s degree from the University of St. Gallen (HSG). He also completed the Impact Investing Programme at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
Matteo is Director Growth at Blue Horizon in Zurich. He has a 7 year background in Investment Banking at Rothschild & Co in both Europe and the US. Before joining Blue Horizon, Matteo was a Vice President of M&A in New York where he focused on transactions in the Food & Beverage industry. He is passionate about working with entrepreneurs and impact driven companies to improve the way we eat. Matteo holds an MBA from INSEAD (Fontainebleau and Singapore) and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of St. Gallen (HSG).
Michael is our advisor for nutrition & health. Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM, is a physician, New York Times bestselling author (e.g. “How not to die”), and internationally recognized speaker on a number of important public health issues. He is a founding member and Fellow of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture. Monika is an MBA Intern in the venture team in Zurich and is working with Blue Horizon investment team. She has 5 years of experience in the petcare market and is a whole-food plant-based enthusiast. She holds a bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the U.S. and is currently pursuing her MBA in Harvard Business School in Boston. Monika loves reading (reads ~40 books a year), enjoys jewelry making and despite being very sustainability conscious – loves watching Formula1 racing.
Nate is the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Blue Horizon, where he works on investment portfolio development, industry analysis, partnership development, and strategic initiatives. Nate is a subject matter expert in alternative proteins, previously working as the Startup Growth Specialist at the Good Food Institute – the leading NGO in the sector – where he drafted the three flagship state of the industry reports on plant-based, cell-based, and fermentation-enabled meat, eggs, and dairy. He is a frequent public speaker, writer of 15+ published articles, author of the eco-biotechnology newsletter, Fifth Industrial. Nate previously worked at a university-affiliated biotechnology incubator, apprenticed with a venture capital firm, and earned a B.A. (Economics) and J.D. (Commercial Law) from the University of Kansas.
Oliver is an Associate in our team in Zurich. He has previously worked in the alternative fuel space for LafargeHolcim across South East Asia and a Swiss early-stage VC. He holds a master’s degree in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology from the Imperial College London and a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from HKUST (Hong Kong). His core competencies are biotechnology, healthcare and nutrition. He identifies and researches new investment opportunities and is part of the due diligence team.
Olivia is a Director Impact & Client Solutions in the Blue Horizon team and focuses on ESG integration. She has over 9 years of finance and entrepreneurial experience and co-founded Olive+Squash, a sustainable farm to table, fast casual restaurant concept in the United Kingdom. Prior to this, she worked at Blackstone Alternative Asset Management, in investor relations for the hedge fund solutions group. She started her career in the financial institutions group of the investment banking division of Goldman Sachs International in London. Olivia received a BA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters of Science from Imperial Business School in Climate Change, Management and Finance.
Robert is our Program Director responsible for several strategic initiatives. He has over 15 years of experience managing programs in large financial services firms across Europe either as management consultant (KPMG) or project manager (ABN Amro Asset Management). Most recently he built and ran UBS's Global Visionaries program identifying and supporting impact-driven entrepreneurs at the forefront of tackling some of the world's most challenging social and environmental problems. At UBS, Robert was also leading the plant-based movement moderating Future of Food panels at UHNW and GFO events, integrating the topic in CIO research and facilitating access to plant-based investment opportunities. Using his global network in the plant-based entrepreneurship space, Robert is responsible for growing our (pre-)seed portfolio. He holds two Master degrees (MSc) in business and consulting from the Rotterdam School of Management.
Ron is Co-Founder of Wild Earth and IndieBio and founding partner of Berkeley BioLabs as well as visiting lecturer at the Center for Food Innovation and Entrepreneruship in Santa Clara, California. He has experience in the biotechnology industry and has built several startups during his industry career as employee, consultant and principal. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University focusing in biophysics.
Ryan’s aim is to positively impact our and the animals lives through applied biotechnology and is CEO of Wild Earth. He has founded as CEO and Co-Founder over 3 biotech companies, has invested as Angel or VC in over 70 biotech companies, is Co-Founder of IndieBio (SOSV), closed over $200M of Clinical BioPharma deals and has co-founded 4 biotech shared lab spaces in the US (Oakland, Berkeley, SF and LA).
Solange is Principal at our headquarter in Zurich. She has a Bachelor's degree in Economics, specialized in Financial Analysis and in Marketing Management at Lisbon University, and obtained her MBA at IESE Business School. She developed her skills in investments by working six years as executive board member in an Asset Management Company in Lisbon and also working at Blue Horizon Management AG in Zurich.
Snezana (Susie) Howe has joined Blue Horizon as Business Support to the Executive Team and to manage day to day operational projects. She has 15 years of capital markets experience including JPMorgan, Piper Jaffray and most recently Generation Investment Management where she was a member of the Research Strategy Team. As a lifelong vegetarian and recent vegan, she is super excited to be working with an organisation that is dedicated to creating a more sustainable future.
Tanmay is Principal in our team in Zurich. He previously worked at Santander InnoVentures, Santander Bank’s venture capital fund, where he worked on early stage investments in the fintech space. He began his career at Cambridge Associates advising institutional investors on venture capital and growth equity investments. Tanmay holds an MBA from London Business School and BA in Economics (magna cum laude) from Carleton College (USA).
Urs Wietlisbach is a member of the Advisory Board of Blue Horizon since 2021. He is the Co-Founder of Partners Group and an executive member of Partners Group Holding AG's Board of Directors, based in Zug and Chairman of the Board's Client Oversight Committee. He has many years of experience in the private equity industry and holds various board mandates in companies and foundations. He is - among others - on the Board of Directors of PG Impact Investments AG and the PG Impact Investments Foundation, a foundation that focuses on impact investing worldwide. Prior to founding Partners Group, he worked at Goldman Sachs & Co. and Credit Suisse. He holds a master's degree in business administration from the University of St. Gallen (HSG), Switzerland.
