Startups Feed Consumers’ Convenience Cravings With Plant-Based Meals
Online sales of meal kits are forecast to top $10 billion by 2020, up from about $1 billion in 2015, according to data from Statista. Plant-based eating was identified by Baum + Whiteman as a hot dining trend this year, and restaurant delivery service GrubHub reported a 19% jump in orders for vegan food. Meal kit companies like Purple Carrot are increasingly popular for people looking to get more creative with plant-based cooking without having to spend time searching for recipes and shopping for ingredients. Earlier this year, Purple Carrot announced it had raised $4 million in new funding from produce giant Fresh Del Monte, bringing the total raised by the startup to $10 million.
