SuperMeat, Now Funded in Part by Blue Horizon

blue horizon is continuing to expand its portfolio of food startup investments. The latest investment to fit in this category is SuperMeat, a company based in Tel Aviv that’s working to change the way we produce our meat.

Reducing the environmental footprint and cruelty of our food consumption will not solely come from eating plants. But the factory farming method is unconscionably harmful to both animals and planet, and raising animals in traditional farms is unsustainable on a mass scale. SuperMeat is seeking another solution to this problem: extracting meat from poultry in a humane way and creating cell cultures.

SuperMeat is working on producing almost limitless quantities of chicken meat from a single biopsy: a procedure that’s ultimately harmless to the animal. These meat cells are grown under controlled and sterile conditions, eliminating the risk of contamination with bacteria and food-borne diseases. Since all this meat can be produced from a single chicken, the process will require much less land, water, and energy than raising and butchering hundreds and thousands of chickens.

Ido Savir, CEO of SuperMeat, says: “As an ideologically driven startup, we feel privileged to have such a knowledgeable and mission-driven partner as blue horizon. Our goal and main focus is on producing a commercially viable production process for clean meat products thus helping transform the meat industry to be more sustainable and healthier for all beings. Blue Horizon`s breadth of experience and understanding of the FoodTech and AgriTech worlds is a strategic force that will help us take the best path to commercialization and market penetration.”

Roger Lienhard, Founder and CEO of blue horizon, adds: “As much as we would like the future to be entirely plant-based, we want to reduce our overall impact on the environment any way we can. SuperMeat’s ultimate goals are in perfect alignment with our own. We hope that our investment will bring SuperMeat’s extraction process closer to commercial viability.”
